ESSAY JANK - Thesis Statement
A clearly written thesis statement helps you & readers alike
In a thesis statement (here's my bare bones definition), you briefly tell readers what your entire paper is about. It's one sentence long, and it's a spoiler. But with a thesis statement, readers understand what the paper covers.
In fact, readers expect the paper to cover only what's included in that thesis statement.

Where does the statement go? Well, the simplest place for a thesis statement is at the end of the introductory paragraph. Look below for samples of thesis statements.
Example 1: simple thesis
assignment: write a personal narrative of a typical day for you.
thesis statement: When I come home, my time is divided between being a parent, watching television, and doing homework.
The 3 points of that thesis are the following:
-
parenting
-
watching TV
-
homework

Example 3: article or report
assignment: write a report on a recent study about zink.

thesis statement: A study by scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison finds a correlation between deficient zinc intake and defective proteins that are found in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s diseases.
This thesis statement is not as 1-2-3 basic as the other examples. However, it is understood the paper will explain research that finds a correlation between zinc and disease.
